In addition, we have an expanding collection of reference materials offering the most up-to-date information. Caregiver Resource Center Americans are living longer. The care of a dependent older person is a significant issue for a spouse or adult child. Frequently, the caregiver feels overburdened, isolated, in need of information. Caregivers may now avail themselves of a variety of resources designed to provide relief from caregiving responsibilities. Somers Library is one of five Caregiver Resource Centers (CRC) in Westchester County. Each center houses a collection of information and materials to support caregivers of older adults, as well as older adults caring for children under the age of 18. The collection includes books, DVDs and videos, pamphlets, reading and resource lists, as well as other materials. Children's Programs Story hour sessions for preschool children are held regularly. Please check the Children's Room for the calendar of events. Every summer, the library sponsors a summer reading program for preschool and elementary age students. To register for these programs or for further information, please contact either of our Children's Librarians at 914-232-5717. Community Rooms Community groups are invited to use our meeting rooms which accommodate up to 70 people. These are available for any non-profit, homeowners or non-commercial group meeting. Please ask at the circulation desk for more information. Computers/Wireless Access Somers Library has four Internet-capable computers in our adult department, two Internet-capable computers in our Children's Room, and a dedicated computer for searching our online catalog. There are also two gaming computers in our Children's Room and one for young adults. And yes, we do have wireless Internet access available! It will easily connect with your Mac or Windows laptop. DVD/Video Collection Somers Library has an ever-growing collection of DVDs and VHS tapes - more than 4,500 items that include classic and newly released films for all ages. We also have a collection of non-fiction materials on a variety of subjects: travel, how-to, history, sports, literature, art and music. Exhibits and Displays The library will display art exhibits and arrange for shows in accordance with the library's policy and procedures for handling this type of material. Please contact the Library Director at 914-232-5717 for further information. Homebound Delivery Our delivery program brings library materials to homebound residents of Somers each month. Trained volunteers visit homebound residents to deliver or pick up library materials. Library staff selects books and other materials according to the preferences of the homebound library users. To be eligible for this service you must be a Somers resident unable to come to the library due to a permanent condition. For example, you are no longer able to drive, have mobility problems, or require extended bed rest. You may remain in the program for as long as you need the service. Homebound residents interested in the program may contact the Reference Librarian at 914-232-5717. Would you like to become a Homebound Services Volunteer? You may visit someone you already know who needs the service, or the Library can match you with someone in your area. Volunteers visit individual homes once a month. Volunteers will pick up pre-selected materials at the library, deliver them to the homebound person, and return the items that are due. With just a few hours of time, volunteers provide a month of enjoyment for a homebound person. Meeting new people and having a flexible schedule are added benefits. To sign-up, please call the Reference Librarian at 914-232-5717. Interlibrary Loans Somers Library is a member of the Westchester Library System, which allows Somers patrons to borrow books from any of the member libraries - in person or by placing a hold through our catalog. All you need is your library card! In addition, we can request print materials (only books - no audiovisual materials) from libraries outside of the system. Please allow a few weeks for delivery, as these materials may be sent from another county or another state. Magazines & Newspapers Somers Library subscribes to approximately 95 nationally known magazines including business, children's, food, hobby, science, sports, teen's and general news magazines. In addition, 22 newspapers are received regularly by the library. Access to local area and state newspapers, as well as major national papers and business journals, is available through our electronic databases. Photocopies The library has one public photocopier, available by the front door. Materials may be copied for a charge of 10 cents per page.
